NEW CAPITAL (2021-2023)

Due to ecological, demographic or strategic reasons, several countries have recently decided to build new capitals: smart cities built on virgin land. NEW CAPITAL is a photographic research into the characteristics of these purpose-built cities and the social and ecological consequences.

Globalisation has a uniforming effect on the appearance of large cities. The contemporary city is increasingly becoming a city of simulations, stripped of historical stratification, local character and identity. The specific is replaced by the interchangeable. NEW CAPITAL takes a closer look at these urban processes in 6 cities around the globe: Brasilia (Brazil), Abuja (Nigeria), Astana (Kazakhstan), Sejong (South-Korea), New Administrative Capital NAC (Egypt) and Nusantara (Indonesia).

The book NEW CAPITAL (Lannoo, 2024) is available in my webshop.
