Tomatina warriors

The annual tomato war in Bunol near Valencia, Spain, is too dangerous for a photographer. I stayed at a safe distance and portrayed the warriors after the fight. 3 shots per head, very quickly done. Many of them are foreigners, coming even from Australia, Japan, America or Scandinavia.

Portraits at Gallery Ecker – Breda

From August 1st to September 12th 2010 Galerie Ecker in Breda shows a group exhibition of portraits, combining different art disciplines. One photograph of mine, a portrait of a ritual butcher, made in Kars, Turkey in 2006, has been selected for the show.
The exhibition is open on saturday and sunday from 12AM to 6PM, and on appointment. Galerie Ecker is situated at Markendaalseweg 18, 4811 KC Breda, The Netherlands.

From the Ecker newsletter:

‘Waar ben je mee bezig man, er zijn er al tien miljoen van gemaakt’ . Dit riep David van de Kop, docent beeldhouwen aan de Koninklijke Academie te ’s-Hertogenbosch, we schrijven 1978. Hij kwam even langs het atelier waar we een les portret achter de rug hadden. Ik keek hem wat dwaas verbaasd aan en dacht, 10 miljoen ?

Het is algemeen bekend, in de loop der eeuwen en nu ook, zijn kunstenaars gefascineerd door ‘het portret’ . Niets is zo persoonlijk als het portret, zowel voor de geportretteerde als voor de kunstenaar. Het is iedere keer een spannende uitdaging om de expressie in het portret ‘gezicht’ te geven: het nemen van de juiste beslissingen en het maken van keuzes om zo de kwintessens van innerlijke gevoelens te verbeelden. Het is de manier van kijken, van zowel de kunstenaar als geportretteerde.

Galerie Ecker heeft kunstenaars uitgenodigd tijdens de zomer hun portretten in de galerie te exposeren.
De techniek is van geen belang, de samenstelling in verscheidenheid des te meer, door tekening, grafiek, olieverf, foto en sculptuur zullen deze beelden elkaar beïnvloeden, elkaar aan kijken en een fascinerend schouwspel vormen voor bezoekers. Wij als toeschouwer kunnen en zullen ons verbazen, verrassen en laten meeslepen door expressieve en ook introverte, opdringerige, stilte.
Het is het blootleggen van de ziel als reflectie van ons bestaan in deze tijd.

From June 18 to September 5 the open air photo exhibition “Elders – Idylle en frictie in het landschap” (Elsewhere – Idylle and friction in the landscape) is taking place on 23 locations in the Dutch town of Sint-Michielsgestel. Two photographs of “Red Journey” have been selected for the project: ‘Yevpatorija, Ukraine, 2008′ and ‘Aralsk, Kazakhstan, 2007′ will be shown on canvasses of 4 by 6 meter.

Paris Match

Paris Match publishes 12 pages on FACING BRUSSELS this week. One spread shows Dennis and Sylvia, a couple I visited many times to photograph their difficult living situation in their decrepit flat in De Marollen.

Slideluck Potshow

FACING BRUSSELS

Our first collective Nadaar-project is almost ready. The exhibition FACING BRUSSELS will open next thursday June 9 at the BelVue Museum in Brussels. 11 BELGIAN photographers joined forces to make a documentary about the diversity of the population of our capital. The catalogue, published by BAI, is for sale at the bookshop of the museum and costs 9,95 Euro.

From the website of BelVue: “The media paint a distressing portrait of Brussels as a city populated by idle young people and thugs. The terraces, parks and prodigious art collections do not feature in the news. It is not easy to love Brussels. Sullen and genial, chic and shabby: the city is everything. Brussels is different according to whether you are a tourist, you live in the suburbs or the city; whether you are homeless, a noble or a Eurocrat. He or she who is born here sees things differently from the immigrant. Eleven Flemish and francophone photographers have translated this plurality into images. Catherine Vuylsteke has put it into words. Facing Brussels: a book and an exhibition, to see in the city and bookshops.”

Lecture Nadaar

Punctum vzw invites our Collective NADAAR to deliver a lecture about our way of working. This will take place on the 3rd of june 2010 in the Zebrastraat in Ghent. There will be a book presentation of Paul D’Haese afterwards. Free entrance.
